“Motivation
In the first blog, my mom’s advice to parents was to start preparing their children’s resume as early as possible. Let’s dive in a little deeper on that topic! Yes… “T” is my mom!
The initial concept was driven by my mom, who not only built my resume initially, but also encouraged me to continue to add my achievements as they happened. What was the result of this deliberate early action? I learned what a good resume should include and how to build on it; and I was able to see progress as I got older which served as great motivation to be a better student and public servant.
…It can also be nostalgic. Sometimes we forget how much we’ve accomplished…
Fuel
My resume travelled with me to university and there I had it re-imagined. With the assistance of my university’s career center…and Google…lots and lots of googling, I was able to re-invigorate my resume and highlight my achievements more succinctly than I had before…The engine that my mom started was now charging full steam ahead!
Most universities and colleges have a dedicated career center ready to help and I urge college students to make use of its offerings. As an example, my university offered services such as resume and cover letter writing assistance, mock interviews, and links to job search boards. It even had a service that allowed me to connect with alumni who might have opportunities available or have tips to give.
SON’S TIP – Start attending the general career fairs and the fairs directed at your desired industry as an underclassman. Its good practice and you can make valuable connections!
Success
I began a serious job search in the fall of my senior year of college. My senior year was far from a relaxing wind-down! It was a whirlwind of going to classes, taking exams, sending out applications, going to job fairs, doing virtual and in person interviews, some of which required me to travel to out of the state , to secure a job…And guess what? I was successful! My search ended with multiple job offers and I had a job lined up two months before graduation!
SON’S TIP — Don’t wait to start your job search until you graduate or just before you graduate. Maximize your time and potential by getting started early! You wouldn’t want to wait, do you?“
