The Theme
The theme of Women’s History Month is ” Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” Many people immediately think of their mother when they hear the theme, which is a natural and heartwarming thought because mothers are innately nurturers. However, there are many others who assume similar roles in our lives but are quite often overlooked. The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us that female frontline workers are the glue that holds our communities together.
Healthcare Worker
Data provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, shows that the healthcare and social assistance industry presently employs 21.2 million workers, 16.4 million or 77.6 % of whom are women. While the pandemic raged many of us were afraid to leave our homes but the female healthcare workers literally stepped out to face the virus’s challenge. The data makes it abundantly clear that that the health of the nation is in the hands of women!
Duty Called; They Answered
The role of the female healthcare worker cannot be overemphasized. We saw firsthand their work during the COVID-19 pandemic; the female nurses, doctors and other medical personnel who worked diligently and tirelessly in our communities and hospitals to ensure that many would remain safe and well. Sadly, they couldn’t save everyone and some were lost to the virus. Women were at the forefront of the pandemic fight; mothers and daughters who had placed their lives on the line to take care of our needs. The female healthcare workers are heroes and the heartbeat of the nation.
Their Stories
The stories are many; the medical workers who could not go home for weeks due to the demands of sick patients and the fear of spreading the virus to their families. I remember… healthcare workers making short visits home to wave to their children and spouses on the other side of closed glass windows. I remember … workers sharing the pain they experienced of watching people die alone, without their family by their side. We leaned on them and hoped they would make us feel better, take away our pain and help us survive the virus. Many workers were forced to keep their emotions in check, hopeful that the next day would be a better day. Yes, there were many stories; they endured and many of us are living.
Healing and Hope
The pandemic positivity rate continues to decline and many people are feeling more confident about going back to work, traveling and socializing. While we try to reclaim some kind of normalcy in our lives or rather embrace the new normal, we should continue to honor the theme ” Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope” and show gratitude for those who fought fiercely for many to live. We must express thanks to the female frontline workers who themselves faced death while they answered the call of duty.

I have nothing but respect for frontline workers, especially moms who have to juggle a work schedule and their children’s schedules. I think a majority of us took for granted how important frontline workers are.
