We live in a world where distrust seems to have taken root at every level of society—whether personal or professional. Even within families, children sometimes doubt that their parents will honor commitments, fulfill responsibilities, or live up to their promises. This erosion of trust highlights the need for a key virtue: transparency.
Transparency removes doubts, questions, and uncertainty. It fosters an environment where people feel safe, informed, and confident in the intentions of those they rely on. In the business world, for instance, being transparent can work wonders. By sharing relevant information with employees—while being mindful of what can or cannot be disclosed—leaders can create clarity, encourage engagement, and build trust without overpromising or compromising future plans.
Ultimately, transparency is about creating bridges of understanding. Whether at home, at work, or in society at large, when we are open and honest, we pave the way for stronger relationships and lasting trust.
Effects of Lack of Transparency

The lack of transparency can have numerous negative consequences in various contexts. Here are some of the cons:
- Erosion of Trust – Lack of transparency by people or organizations frequently lead to skepticism and distrust. People may assume there is something to hide, damaging relationships and credibility.
- Low Morale – Employees or team members who feel left out or kept in the dark often experience low morale, disengagement, and reduced productivity.
- Stifled Creativity – In workplaces, a lack of openness discourages collaboration and idea-sharing. Employees may feel de-motivated or fearful of contributing, which can hinder creativity and progress.
- Limited Progress – Without clear communication, projects and initiatives run the risk of being delayed or derailed. Goal coherence and purpose clarity are facilitated by transparency.
- Reduced Responsibility – A lack of transparency can allow individuals or organizations to avoid scrutiny, leading to unethical behavior, corruption, or reckless conduct since there’s no system of checks and balances.
- Increased Conflicts – Where there is a lack of openness and poor communication, misunderstandings proliferate. This creates an environment where tension and arguments thrive, as people are more likely to question each other’s intentions and actions.
- Legal and Financial Risks: In sectors like finance and healthcare where openness is mandated by law, omitting to reveal relevant information may lead to legal action, fines, or penalties. A damaged reputation may lead to a decline in community support, investors, or customers.
In my view, an atmosphere of ambiguity, inefficiency, and mistrust is created by a lack of openness, and this can have negative consequences on people, groups – teams, organizations, and society at large.
Business Clarity

When giving employees information about an impending initiative, a company or organization can do the following to keep lines of communication open:
Set the Tone of Openness
• Clearly communicate the business or program commitment to transparency and honesty from the start. This builds a foundation of trust, even when all the details cannot yet be shared.
Explain the “Why”
• Share the reason behind the decision or upcoming change. For example: “We are exploring ways to improve efficiency in our processes to better meet our goals.” This helps employees understand the purpose without needing every detail.
Share High-Level Information
• Provide a general overview of what’s happening without getting into specifics. For instance: “We’re planning an organizational change in the coming months, but we are still working out the details. Once finalized, we’ll share the full plan.”
Set Clear Expectations And Be Honest About Timelines
• Let employees know when they can expect more information:
“You can expect an update on this by [specific date]. In the meantime, please reach out if you have questions or concerns.” This reduces uncertainty and reassures them that they won’t be left in the dark.
• If plans are still in development, acknowledge it. For example:
“We are still in the planning phase, and no decisions have been made yet. We want to be thoughtful in our approach and will share updates as soon as they’re ready.”
Allow Room for Questions
• Create opportunities for employees to ask questions or share feedback, even if you can’t answer all questions yet. This might be through town halls, Q&A sessions, or one-on-one discussions.
Keep Your Word / Stay True to Your Promises
• Deliver updates on time and ensure the information shared aligns with what was initially communicated. If delays occur, update employees promptly and explain why.
By combining honesty, clarity, and follow-through, businesses can maintain transparency with employees while managing sensitive or evolving information.
