Roommate
If you are living on campus during your first year of college, it is likely that you will have a roommate and you may be required to sign a roommate agreement, a typical document outlining the do’s and don’ts while living together. Prior to moving in, some students will interact with their roommate on social media to help ease some of the initial awkwardness on meeting. Your ability to get along with people will be essential to creating positive roommate dynamics.
College Preparedness – Budget
Spend wisely and stick to your budget. Priority should be given to your needs such as those for books, food and toiletries. Work without play makes for a dull life; it is okay to spend some of your budget surplus on entertainment like a movie night!
A good way to make extra money and boost your budget is to enroll in the college work study program. You will be allowed to work a maximum of 15 hours per week under the program, allowing you time to study. Your academic success should come first, and if you choose to work, consider quitting if you find it difficult to balance work and school.
Social Life
Making friends is crucial because for some students, leaving home and adjusting to a new environment can be challenging, and homesickness can eventually set in. If you are an international student, you could experience some culture shock, but don’t worry—just take your time and get used to your new routine.
College Preparedness – Meals
A pre-paid meal plan is an excellent idea for your freshman year as it will give you time to get your “sea legs,” adjust, and concentrate on your studies without stressing about meal preparation or finding food. In your second year of on-campus living, you will have access to more living and dining options.
Personal Space and Care
You are now living away from home, and your mom isn’t around to wash your clothes or tidy your room anymore. Hey, it’s not that difficult to operate a washer and dryer, you are now required to do so and will be up to speed in no time. Welcome to the real world; this is how it is! This is your life… learning while you live!
Good Luck College Student!
