Silent Letters and Words

What do you think of when you hear the term “silent words”? You most likely would think of words that are spelt a certain way but are not pronounced in certain context. For example, the words knight and knife have silent letters – K. Quite often words with silent letters are considered silent words and this sometimes makes it difficult for some learners, especially young ones. Communication.

Silent words can also be non-verbal cues or gestures such as a smile or a nod. Whether it’s a word or a gesture it usually carries a meaning. To ensure that the intended message is understood, it is important to make sure that the word or action chosen is suitable for the circumstance.

COMMUNICATION A MIME WITH SAD FACE DRAWN ON HIS PALM

Has anyone ever told you that you possess silent words? This could indicate that you are leaving out words and phrases when you speak, which makes your message hard to understand and challenging to follow. Some strategies to avoid this issue include reflecting on feedback, taking other people’s perspectives into account and looking for ways to communicate better both verbally and nonverbally.

Silent Deceit

Sometimes, using non-verbal communication in certain circumstances is a deliberate attempt to mislead or deceive. One example of how silent words can occasionally be used with the deliberate goal to mislead is using purposeful silence or limited comments to avoid addressing an issue directly. This can give the impression of consent or neutrality.

Body Language -Communication

In social settings, silent words can be conveyed through body language such as, a smile or a nod, indicating agreement or understanding without verbalizing it. In professional environments, silence during negotiations or discussions can also carry meaning, signaling contemplation, disagreement, or acknowledgment

Additionally, in intimate relationships, expressions of love or affection through actions rather than words can be considered silent words.  The use of silent words in intimate relationships can sometimes result in moments of uncertainty, doubt and mistrust. While this is not always the case, one partner may sometimes assume that the other partner will be able to decipher the silent communication being expressed, and as a result, the subsequent reaction may turn out to be unanticipated and unexpected.

Communication in this type of relationship requires a deep understanding of each other, which will dictate when and how to use silent words to express oneself. In my opinion, there should be less silent words and more straightforward communication.

Effective communication plays an important role in both personal and professional relationships. Remember, silent words does carry meaning.
