Solo Motherhood

Mother’s Day is just as much of a celebration for solo moms as it is for other moms. One of the many difficulties of being a single parent is finding time to make meaningful memories with your children. Being a single parent myself, I understand the value of special occasions like Mother’s Day for both parent and child. Solo Motherhood Day.

Community

In my spiritual community, there are special luncheons and gift-giving for single moms as an extra measure of appreciation. Participating in these kinds of events with your child or children has extra significance and one which I would usually look forward to celebrating with my son.

The love and bonding between mothers and children was on full display and emphasized the importance of mothers and motherhood. No single mother was made to feel as though they were not entitled to enjoy the day and the auspicious occasion often led to the formation of friendships between many single mothers. As my son became older, we continued to be active in our spiritual community and loved the early morning gathering where all mothers – married or single – were given a red rose.

On occasion we would choose to have our social treat delivered by a neighborhood restaurant instead of attending the communal luncheon. Mothers Day is a popular day for families to dine out but we often opted for eating at home because it allowed us to spend more quality time together than waiting in line at busy restaurants.

The Treat – Solo Motherhood Day

Visiting my adult son who now lives away from home is a great Mother’s Day treat for me. Spending time with him is nice, even if we don’t do anything spectacular. Being with him is a delight in and of itself.

To the children of solo moms (and other moms), here are a few ways you can honor your moms:

  • DIY- Make her a gift from the heart. Give her a  keepsake, such as a card, painting, write a poem , something  she will look over and over .
  • Video / Audio – Tell her in a recorded message how much she inspires you.
  • Meal – Make her a delicious dinner.  Make it a bonding moment.
  • Relaxation – Give her a relaxation gift such as a massage or spa treatment
  • Time – Gift of time – spend time talking and sharing so you can make great memories.
  • Day Out – Plan a day out with her doing a fun activity she likes such as visiting a museum or sightseeing in a new place. ( one of my fav’s)

Mothers Day is a wonderful opportunity to show appreciation for all the hard work and love that single mothers put into raising their children.  So, go make your memories with mom!

T’s Tip: Moms…use your child’s cards and artwork from his or her elementary and middle school years to make a journal or write a book!
