Humanity encompasses the collective experiences, creativity, struggles, and triumph of people throughout time.  In essence, humanity is about growth—individual and collective— learning from our mistakes and supporting one another as we try to improve the future. Understanding Humanity.

All too frequently, I witness acts of selfishness that astound me. Daily instances of narcissism, self-indulgence, and heartless behavior that raises the question, where is the humanity? If we fail to incorporate humility, empathy, and compassion into our professional and personal lives on a daily basis, we are inadvertently fostering a culture that is callous, egocentric, and lacks regard for others.

The song “Whoo child the world is going to get better” by Donny McClurkin caught my attention while I was riding to work recently and I want to believe the message. It is indeed necessary for us – global citizens – to bridge the divide in an increasing polarized society, or otherwise we would have failed the “little people” -our children – we brought into the world.

Change Culture – Understanding Humanity

Understanding Humanity Men And Women Having A Discussion

It is important that we encourage a true change culture – mindset – wherein individuals, businesses, and society as a whole acknowledge their respective roles and mutual dependence. When we work to gain greater awareness and respect for each person’s needs we demonstrate concern for each other. We also improve our understanding of functional needs and how they fit into the broader context. This encourages an environment that thrives and not one that is feared or resisted.

Acts of Humanity

Here are some everyday acts that embody the essence of humanity:

  • Helping others without expecting anything in return.
  • Giving service to others in need – such as volunteering at your local YMCA or Big Brother Big Sister organization.
  • Showing Kindness – just a simple act such as holding the door for someone may brighten their day.
  • Standing up for others – be the voice for those being treated unfairly.
  • Protecting the planet – is giving sustenance to all people. When we protect the Earth everyone benefits and the ecosystem is preserved for future generations.

Understanding Humanity

Putting the human into humanity requires a collective effort – on a societal level it means creating systems that uplift people. On a personal level, it is how we interact with people – interpersonal sensitivity – how we treat those we meet, how we listen to others and how we act with integrity. Understanding Humanity.
