Willpower – The Case Of The Disappearing Ice-cream

Willpower

We all know it’s supposed to be this inner strength that helps us resist temptation and stay on track with our goals. It sounds great in theory—but in practice? Well, let me tell you a little story.

The Ice-cream

Sweets are my calling. They sing to me, I know it, and I’ve accepted it. I walk into the grocery store, head down the infamous ice cream aisle, and give the freezer doors a longing glance. Stay strong, I tell myself, just look but don’t touch. However, on this particular day, I touched and I cracked, and ended up buying a pack of ice cream sandwiches. My logic? “I’ll just have one each weekend.” Totally manageable, right?

Wrong.

The problem wasn’t eating one. The problem was knowing they were in the house—right there in the freezer, whispering sweet nothings to me after dinner. I’d try to be good. I’d eat a piece of fruit first—like that somehow made it okay—and then… boom… Ice cream sandwich.

Guilt started to build as the box emptied. I knew I was losing the battle. But then, something amazing happened. One evening, I mustered the courage to do what I never thought I could: I tossed the last one in the garbage. Victory!

Practice, Practice

It may not sound like much, but that tiny act was a turning point. It reminded me that willpower isn’t about being perfect—it’s about showing up for yourself, even after a few missteps. It’s about recognizing when you’ve veered off course and gently nudging yourself back on track.

So, how many of you can relate to this scenario? I’m guessing a lot of hands are going up right now.

Here’s the truth: Willpower is a daily practice. Sometimes it shows up strong, and other times it wavers. But each time we make a better choice—even a small one—we’re building that muscle. And that’s something to celebrate.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a fruit bowl calling my name (and I promise, no ice cream sandwiches hiding behind it… this time).

Your Turn

What’s your version of the disappearing ice cream sandwich? We all have that one thing that tests our willpower. Share your story in the comments—I’d love to hear how you face (and sometimes fall for) temptation. And, if you’re on a journey to build stronger habits, know this: you’re not alone, and every small win counts. Let’s cheer each other on!

Wow, I can definitely relate to the ice cream scenario. Each time I tell myself, this is the last one. I must be stronger.
