The Reaction

Black poetry is a reaction to both historical and contemporary black experiences. The poetry provides us with a perspective into the fight for justice and equality. The writings speak of our heroes, civil rights and the beauty of the black people. Black History!

The poems reveal the essence of our spirit, shows our resilience, and our capacity to succeed in the face of hardship. They speak of our values, our humanity and remind us that out of many we are one – one people, one voice.

Black History Beautiful Black Woman

Here are some words of Black Poets I have selected to share with you:

Langston Hughes – Dreams

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

Maya Angelou – Still I Rise

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Alice Walker – Expect Nothing

Expect nothing. Live frugally on surprise.
Become a stranger to need of pity or,
If compassion be freely given out take
only enough.

Audre Lorde – Coal

I
Is the total black, being spoken
From the earth’s inside.
There are many kinds of open.
How a diamond comes into a knot of flame
How a sound comes into a word, coloured
By who pays what for speaking.

Amanda Gorman – The Hill We Climb

The new dawn blooms as we free it.
For there is always light.
If only we’re brave enough to see it.
If only we’re brave enough to be it
.

Unity – Black History

Where there is unity, you will find strength and progress will ensue.  Honor the contribution of the strong black voices and align your energies with ways that promote  growth and not hatred. Mourn those who continue to perpetuate the injustices of the past.   Certainly, we have come a long way, but there is still a ways to go.

Let’s dispel the fallacy that a person’s worth to society or how they ought to be treated depends on the color of their skin. Remember the struggles of our past, rejoice in our accomplishments and keep striving to create a lasting legacy for our children.
