The Story – Giving With Love

The practice of giving presents has its roots in religious rituals and has been around for thousands of years. In ancient day, gifts were reserved for kings and other leaders as people sought to secure favors and influence.

Giving With Love The Three Wise Men

You may be familiar with the Christmas story of the Three Wise Men, who traveled great distances to give presents to the infant Jesus. This story serves as an example of how early gift-giving began. The story is very popular and is frequently retold during the Christmas season.

How does receiving a gift make you feel? How do you feel after giving a gift? Many people experience emotions of gratitude when they receive gifts and most people feel joyful and happy when they give gifts.

In contrast, giving a gift can sometimes have a negative effect such as, making the recipient feel tricked or guilty if they think they received something much less or much more than they had anticipated.

Personal Gift Giving Tips:

  • Be thoughtful; know and understand your recipient so you can select a suitable gift
  • Be appreciative; show gratitude
  • Be non-political; do not give gifts that represent your affiliation as the recipient may find it offensive
  • Be kind; if you don’t like the gift don’t be rude, instead be gracious

Corporate Gift Giving:

  • Know your company’s gift policy on accepting and giving gifts
  • Know the custom and culture of the country in which you conduct business; a gift giving gesture which is acceptable in one country could be considered a bribe in another

Lessons Learnt About Gift Giving

The philosopher Aristotle once said “Friendship…is a kind of virtue, or implies virtue, and it is also most necessary for living. Nobody would choose to live without friends even if he had all the other good things.” Years of giving and receiving presents have taught me two things: 1) tangible gifts are more likely to be misunderstood and may have an ulterior motive; and 2) the gifts that truly mean the most and have the biggest impacts on the recipients are the intangible ones, such as genuine friendship, love, camaraderie, and life. The gift of life is the most priceless and powerful. Therefore, I can unquestionably confirm that the philosopher’s words are indeed accurate.

Expressions of Love Gift – Giving with love and joy!

Last but not least, gifts cost money, and situations may arise wherein you are unable to give a gift. Don’t despair, a card or beautifully handwritten note is a wonderful way to express your feelings for others and the special moment. Many people will treasure your note for years. Also, use the situation as a teaching opportunity so kids can understand entitlement and gift giving.
