I believe we all want to be happy – it is an innate desire that most people pursue daily and may require making choices that support the desire. How we respond to life’s challenges and changes also has an impact on our level of happiness.

Happiness is subjective and an individual experience and what makes one person happy may not make another happy. For example, one individual may derive pleasure from something as simple as listening to their favorite song, while another may find greater fulfillment from something more involved such as, going on vacation.

At any age, happiness can be achieved by living your passion, nurturing positive relationships and opening yourself to new experiences, some of which may require occasionally stepping outside of your comfort zone.

To understand how we experience happiness throughout life, let’s look at the following stages:

Childhood – Happiness

When we’re young, happiness is a continuum characterized by boundless curiosity and play. Growing up, we develop our imaginations and creative faculties while also forging close bonds with family and friends.

Adolescence

Most people explore their interests and passions during their adolescent years. We take on challenges and seek out opportunities that align with our identity. Most will gain confidence in themselves as they grow in self-awareness.

Young Adult

The college years – many people will pursue higher learning and seek to identity their career goals. Many young adults leave home to pursue their dreams and enjoy the freedom to travel and explore. This time allows us to develop independence and become self-sufficient.

Middle Age – Happiness

This is often seen as the retirement phase, during which one starts pursuing interests and passions. Self-care—maintaining one’s health and enjoying life after the 9 to 5 hustle – receive increased attention. Family and friends take on a greater significance in their lives.

Senior Year – Late Adulthood

The focus shifts to reflection on life experiences, and most people become more willing to share their knowledge and insights with their loved ones. Many people embrace new experiences and still continue to learn and grow.

While the happiness of each stage of life varies, the following tips will help you find joy at any stage of life:

  1. Positivity – Cultivate a positive mindset.
  2. Thankful – Practice gratitude for what you have.
  3. Kindness – Engage in acts of kindness and generosity.
  4. Active – Stay physically active and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
  5. Goals – Set and pursue achievable goals.
  6. Rest – Set aside time to relax and enjoy fun activities.
  7. Nature – Appreciate the beauty of the environment and the world around you.
  8. Service – Seek opportunities to give back and make a positive impact on others.

My opinion – self-love; acceptance of oneself and having and a clear sense of your purpose in life are the keys to happiness. We are all entitled to happiness, it’s our birthright, so let’s own it! Live Happy!
