Moving and Movers….How to Minimize Your Stress

It’s a new year, new day and you are moving to a new residence. In a lifetime many people will change residences at least once. People will move locales to start new jobs or to be near family.

Moving can be stressful if the move is not planned and executed well. To minimize your stress maintain a positive mindset, keep in mind the reason why you are moving and, the new experiences and adventures you will enjoy in the new area. https://infinitemoving.com/ Focus on your new beginning!

FAMILY AND FRIENDS

Practical help from family and friends is important when you are moving so; don’t be afraid to ask for help to secure items that are too difficult for you to move and pack. Moving can sometimes be sad and including your friends and family in the preparation provides emotional support for everyone involved and will help make the transition much easier to handle.

BUDGET

Moving can be expensive so calculate your moving budget prior to your move. Work out your closing cost for your new residence, rental payments for your old residence, cost for professional movers, the cleaning cost for your old residence and, the cost for the transfer of utilities and cable from your old residence to your new residence. Carefully work out your budget and set aside money for your move. Money can sometimes be a major stressor so be aware of the moving expenses and budget accordingly.

MOVING TIMELINE

It is very important to create a plan that will provide sufficient time for you to leave your old residence if you have to move by a certain date. Plan your move at least a month after the closing date for your new residence as this will help to minimize your stress. Based on my personal moving experience this timeline will give you enough time to organize your ‘keeps’ and your ‘dumps’, clean and prepare your new residence.

SCHEDULE

You may find my personal schedule useful for your next move.

Week 1 – Conduct a walk-through of your old residence and make a list of the items that you are taking to your new home and a separate list for items that you will donate or dump.  It’s important to include your children in the walk-through so they can also decide what toys or other personal items they want to take with them and the things they no longer need.

Week 2 – Using your walk-through list, separate the keeps and the dumps. Contact your local charity organization and arrange a pick-up date for the items you are donating. Hire a professional packing company and set a date for moving to your new residence.

Week 3 – Pack and label your keeps by room type. This stage can be emotional and the packing will take time. Get rid of your dump items.

Week 4 – Move. All your keep items should be labeled and ready for pick up by the moving company.

TIPS

  • Small household items. If your new residence is in close proximity to your old residence, move small items yourself daily or periodically to the new home as this will help to reduce the amount of additional paid-time the professional movers may need to complete the move.
  • Clothes. Don’t remove clothes from hangers and place them in suit-cases or other containers instead request reusable and recyclable wardrobe boxes from the professional movers. These types of boxes will allow you to move your clothes on the hangers and re-hang them easily in your new residence.
  • Placement. Request that the movers place the boxed items in the rooms in which the items will be used. This will make it much easier to find the things you need to re-create your home setting.
  • Unpacking. I found it takes longer to unpack than to pack so don’t worry if it takes a while, as long as you know where to find the items you need then it’s a breeze!
  • Picture. Take pictures of your items before and after your move, you may need them for insurance purposes should your items get lost or damaged…yes, it happens!
