Mature individuals must understand their value to the workforce. You are a necessary component of what makes an organizations work. Your experience is invaluable!
I know…there is still age discrimination in the workplace despite it being unlawful. I am sure many mature individuals can attest to the somewhat subtle undertones wafting across the workplace from time to time. However, do not be deterred!
You can find more information on Age Discrimination on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commissions’ (EEOC) website. Your experience is necessary to the survival of many businesses so don’t underestimate your relevance!
Data by the US Bureau of Labor has shown that the number of mature individuals in the work-force has grown exponentially over the last two decades and will continue to grow!
By 2024, BLS projects that the labor force will grow to about 164 million people. That number includes about 41 million people who will be ages 55 and older—of whom about 13 million are expected to be ages 65 and older.

I have seen firsthand, the uncertainty, the loss of confidence in the ability to command the attention that is needed to promote self, the dusty resumes and the lack of internet skills.
You must rejuvenate yourself by enhancing your job skills and improving on your tech skills! Applications such as Zoom, Skype, and Teams are the way of the future so get in on a few lessons.
It may not cost you to improve on your computer skills if you simply connect with your children, grandchildren and other young adults who are willing to help you. I have found that children enjoy teaching adults…they feel they now know more than you do! Your are also helping them…it builds their self-confidence! Also, there are lots of free tutorials on the internet so check them out! Check your city website, they too offer free classes. Hey, It’s not too late to refresh you!
Stay informed, a good way to do so it by joining the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). The organization provides tons of useful information on career trends, activities, health and rewards for mature individuals. On receiving my first magazine I thought, oh my, I am so mature! No I was not, neither was I retired! I was just being prepared for a mature future!
So show your value and let’s get to work! The Mature Job Search.

Great words of encouragement for that sector of the population who may think it’s ‘over’ for them – ‘life today is too reliant on technology so I just can’t manage’ thinking. Excellent points and resources to help build confidence and provide hope that it’s NOT over.
Thank You Annette!
Experience that comes with maturity is our strong point, so I make sure to highlight that when I look for jobs now.. since the workforce in the tech industry where I job hunt is definitely way younger than I am 🙂
